With the iPhone 5 launch somewhere between a month and six months away, blogs are reporting on the device’s potential feature list.
Some reports indicate that Apple will offer an unlocked version of the iPhone 5 at launch.
Buyers can use unlocked iPhones with any GSM carrier. Certain users can benefit greatly from unlocked smart phones, especially international travelers and buyers in some non-U.S. markets. Before Apple offered an unlocked version of the iPhone 4, users who wanted an unlocked iPhone had to resort to complex software hacks. Some of these hacks could reduce the iPhone’s stability and caused serious technical errors.
Why Apple Might Not Unlock The iPhone 5 or as its known in the industry, offer a iPhone 5 jailbreak options?
The big question is whether Apple will offer an unlocked iPhone 5 at launch or several months after launch. Apple offered unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 to appease its buyers, but some believe that the iPhone 5 might not launch with an unlocked version.
Apple will want to keep selling the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S after the new model launches, and one of the easiest ways to ensure continued sales is to offer a different set of features for the older models. Apple might wait to sell unlocked versions of the iPhone 5 in an attempt to market a reduced-price version of the iPhone 4 and 4S to international users and others who would want an unlocked smart phone.
The Unlocked iPhone 5 And Apple’s Marketing Strategies
However, Apple might still decide to sell an unlocked iPhone 5 to aggressively compete with other smart phone sellers. Some bloggers believe that Apple will announce the iPhone 5 in June at the World Wide Developer’s Conference (WWDC), and if this is the case, Apple is taking a more aggressive approach with the iPhone 5 than with any of its other recent releases. Some analysts also believe that Apple has fully embraced the concept of an iPhone 5 jailbreak, so the company won’t backtrack by restricting buyers’ options.
If there is an unlocked iPhone 5, it will cost more without a contract from a major phone company.
The unlocked iPhone 4 started at $649, and we expect an unlocked iPhone 5 to cost the same. We will report more in the weeks leading up to Apple’s official iPhone 5 announcement.
